On 8-12-06 at 4am we boarded the Irish Rose at Rock Harbor. By 4:30 Capt. Gunther Klink (our dad) had the engines in gear and we were exiting the harbor headed towards the S.S. James Longstreet. At about 6am we arrived but the seas were still choppy so we decided to make a run to Wellfleet Harbor for some yum, yums. After filling our bellies with delicious egg wraps we darted back to the Longstreet and suited up for our first dive.
The Longstreet today rests entirely below the surface of the water and now acts as an artificial reef. Swimming around her you will encounter Stripped bass, Blackfish, Lobsters and an occasional blue shark. The dive is not nearly as impressive as when she sat atop of the water as a bombing target. For the most part the Longstreet has been lost with the passing of time and very few people remember her when she sat on the horizon waiting for the next bombing attack.
